12 February 2020

Meet the Presenters

At the Portland, Maine, 16th Annual CAFÉ Conference in 2020, we will have an entire day devoted to Educational Best Practices.

HOT TOPIC? How to Grow Our Programs!

A Life Source for Academia: The New Student Growth Paradigm

With the decline in enrollment for culinary programs across the country, schools are scrambling to find new solutions to maintain student enrollment and eek out growth possibilities. Look no further … non-credit continuing education can be the answer. This seminar will delve into various opportunities for academic programs, in the arena of continuing education; with a proven strategy that has helped to add student growth and program stability. A step by step plan will laid out for attendees to use as a template for their own programs.

This topic and discussion will be led by Chef Michael Carmel from Charleston, South Carolina.

Chef Carmel has over 40 years’ experience as an industry chef and educator in post-secondary education. Chef Carmel received his culinary education at the Culinary Institute of America and earned a Masters in Adult Education from National Louis University. He has been a chef educator and culinary director at culinary schools throughout Chicago and Orlando and is presently the Department Head at the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College, Charleston, SC since 2006. He leads education seminars throughout the country and works with chefs and culinary educators throughout the world teaching and developing culinary curriculum. He is a Certified Executive Chef and Certified Culinary Educator with the American Culinary Federation; and has served as national chair of the ACF Education Foundation.
