Kendall College Renews Partnership with CAFÉ to Recognize Best Practices in Teaching Sustainability

10 December 2014

For a seventh year, Kendall College will sponsor the CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Award, the industry’s premiere program lauding successes of culinary-arts and hospitality-management programs that practice and train students in ecological responsibility.

Kendall College proudly announces it has renewed its partnership with CAFÉ for 2015 and a seventh consecutive year.

Through its partnership, Kendall College will continue to sponsor the annual CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Awards—the first national awards to recognize secondary and postsecondary culinary-arts, baking/pastry and hospitality-management programs for their commitment to sustainability and teaching its tenets. The objective of the awards is to build the body of sustainability resources in foodservice and hospitality education. Selection criteria are based on the integration of sustainability into educational programs and/or operations.

Miami (Fla.) Culinary Institute received the 2014 CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Award at CAFÉ’s Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City in June. Previous recipients are Cascade Culinary Institute, Bend, Ore., and Metro Tech High School, Phoenix (2013); Seattle Culinary Academy (2012); Colorado State University’s hospitality-management program (2011); Technology Center of DuPage (2010), Addison, Ill.; and Johnson & Wales University’s Charlotte, N.C., campus (2009).

“We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Kendall College to promote our joint commitment to recognizing and sharing best practices and successful teaching of sustainability with thousands of high schools and postsecondary schools that teach professional culinary arts and hospitality management throughout the United States,” says Mary Petersen, CAFÉ’s founder and president.

Support of CAFÉ by Kendall and, particularly, its School of Culinary Arts, extends beyond the college’s sponsorship of the annual CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Awards program to CAFÉ’s founding in 2002. According to Petersen, Kendall College has been an integral affiliate in creating value for foodservice and hospitality educators nationwide—from delivering professional development at and hosting CAFÉ’s regional workshops and annual Leadership Conferences to contributing regularly to CAFÉ’s monthly e-zine, “Gold Medal Classroom,” to advising CAFÉ on providing needed programs and services as it has grown in relevance and stature with educators over the last 12 years.

More information on the CAFÉ/Kendall College Green Awards, including applying for 2015 awards, is found here. Deadline for entries is April 1, 2015, with a recipient(s) notified by May 1. The award(s) for 2015 will be presented at CAFÉ’s 11th-annual Leadership Conference at Niagara Falls Culinary Institute in Niagara Falls, N.Y., June 18-20.
