National Food Safety Month Highlights the Future of Food Safety

The National Restaurant Association (NRA) announced this year’s National Food Safety Month theme: “The Future of Food Safety.”

National Food Safety Month (NFSM), held annually in September, was created in 1994 by the NRA to heighten awareness about the importance of food safety education. As part of its campaign, the Association offers free resources for foodservice industry professionals.

Presented by ServSafe, the National Restaurant Association’s food safety training and certification program, the 2018 NFSM campaign focuses on new technologies, trends, and regulations that are changing the foodservice landscape and the steps instructors should take to ensure that food safety remains a top priority when dealing with these changes. New training tools and resources will be available each week including activities, posters, infographics, and videos on FoodSafetyFocus.com. The themes for each week include:

  • Week 1: Staying Compliant with New Regulations
  • Week 2: Best Practices for Receiving Food from Suppliers
  • Week 3: Responding to New Trends and Technologies
  • Week 4: The Employee’s Role in Ensuring Food Safety

“The future brings many changes to the foodservice industry,” said Sherman Brown, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association’s Training & Certification division. “One thing that will never change is the need for all foodservice managers and employees to be vigilant about food safety. Throughout this year’s NFSM campaign, we will provide the industry with the resources that can help operators begin and continue meaningful discussions about the vital role every individual plays in creating a workplace committed to food safety.”
