Whether it's reviving grandma’s secret recipe or trying bold new flavors with friends, today’s consumers are turning mealtimes into meaningful moments, according to new research from Culinary Visions®. The national study of 2,101 consumers reveals that food is much more than fuel—it’s a powerful way to express identity, honor tradition and build community.

Among the standout findings:

  • 78 percent said they love sharing foods that reflect their heritage with friends and family.
  • 84 percent like creating new food traditions when they cook for loved ones.
  • 83 percent enjoy exploring different cultures through food.
  • 89 percent treasure old family recipes as their favorite meals.
  • 78 percent said experiencing new foods with friends is one of their favorite social activities.

It’s not just about what’s on the table—it’s about who’s around it. For younger generations, that table extends to their friends and followers on social media. While 45 percent of all respondents said they share their food adventures online, 58 percent of Millennials and Gen Z do so regularly.

“Food has become a modern language of connection,” said Sharon Olson, Culinary Visions® executive director. “We’re seeing people celebrate where they come from, express who they are, and connect with others in meaningful ways—all through food. It’s both nostalgic and forward-looking.”

What this means for everyday food lovers
Whether you’re a home cook, adventurous diner, or food photo fanatic, the message is clear: food is personal. People are creating their own culinary stories by blending old and new— cooking from scratch, trying global flavors, and gathering with others to share the experience. If you’ve ever invited friends over for taco night, tried your hand at making dumplings from scratch, or proudly posted a snapshot of your latest brunch—you're part of this growing movement.

Food isn’t just something we eat – it’s how we connect, create, and explore.
